ANZPT7 Perth Day 1a: New poker room, new season

A mix of fresh and familiar faces have filled the revamped poker room here at Crown Perth as the first Day 1 flight of the ANZPT7 Main Event is currently kicking off.

The poker room which was once separated into two parts now sits solely on the gaming floor, in a prime location for this year's players. Twenty tables will play host to the action, with the registration booth and some great eateries only metres away.

The Snax bar next to the poker room is open all night and ideal for players to grab a bite on scheduled 10-minute breaks. Offering an assortment of sandwiches, wraps and burgers it's the perfect place to refuel between the grind.

On the other side of the action sits Junction Grill, one of Crown Perth's fine dining restaurants. With a comprehensive menu selection and late night opening hours it's sure to see a few players through the doors during extended dinner breaks this week.

As players are busy with Day 1a of the Main Event tonight, the final table of the 6 Handed Event has just drawn to a close. Four players remained when we arrived, including internationals Jack Salter and Mustapha Kanit, who met again after both final tabling the $5,000 Six Max event at the Aussie Millions last month.

This is the first time we've seen Salter and Kanit in Perth, who will no doubt be looking to add to their already impressive resumes. Salter recently had a second place finish in the WSOP APAC Main Event, and Kanit achieved twin cashes at the Aussie Millions.

As we speak, Kanit has emerged victorious in the 6 Handed Event to claim the title and the $34,000 top prize. Both he and Salter are expected to play the second flight of the Main Event tomorrow.

Players tonight will begin with a 20,000 start bank and play through six blind levels of an hour each. The tournament director has just explained that phones are banned from the tables, and table talk is not permitted while there is pending action.

Local favourite Brian Mcallister, who placed fourth in this very event last year, announced the shuffle up and deal. With that, the cards were in the air, and ANZPT Season 7 is officially underway.
