ANZPT7 Sydney Day 1B: Overcoming inequalities

There's an inequality in poker.

It's a problem that has been around since the modern-era boom of big-field poker tournaments.

Why is the last flight of any poker tournament always the largest?

It happens at the Macau Poker Cup, the Aussie Millions and even the World Series of Poker. The last flight of any major poker tournament is always significantly larger than all of the others.

Some would argue it's because poker players are just plain lazy so they like leaving things to the last minute. But the reality is that for those flying in from interstate or overseas, it simply makes sense to fly in late to reduce the accommodation costs they have to pay. Poker players are smarter than they look.

While the discrepancy is unavoidable, we're hoping to see a large inequality today as a big field is expected for Day 1b of the Australia New Zealand Poker Tour (ANZPT) Sydney Main Event. Yesterday we were greeted with a field of 188 players and with today's field already up over 220 and counting, we're looking at another big ANZPT Sydney field.


One of the key problems with differences in field size is the perception that big field equals big stacks. I've pondered an alternative theory that smaller fields mean that the big stacks come together more quickly which can potentially create mega stacks!

We'll test that theory today as it will take a pretty good day out from someone on Day 1b to match Sayed Jabbour's high water mark of 157,400 from yesterday.


It's a loaded field headlined by Australian Poker Hall of Famer Leo Boxell, recent PokerStars Sunday Warm Up winner Tom Grigg, reigning Aussie Millions champion Manny Stavropoulos and PokerStars Team Online's Roy Bhasin.

Once again we'll be playing seven 60-minute levels today which will see play wrapped up at the Friday night friendly time of 8:10pm.
