ANZPT Melbourne: Stars come out to play

"Oh my God! I could've slept for another 20 minutes!" sighed Danny McDonagh as he arrived in the Crown Poker Room this afternoon. A ruthlessly efficient man with his time, McDonagh rolled up at 12:10pm unaware that the start time for Day 1b was set a little later than the previous day.

The 12:30pm start time usually claims its fair share of victims, as the Crown Poker Room avoid having two tournaments starting at the same time. With the $350 Deepstack event underway at 12:10pm our Main Event players will have to join McDonagh in grabbing a quick coffee (or beverage of choice) before play gets underway.

It's Day 1b of the ANZPT Melbourne Main Event and we're expecting another healthy field this afternoon. Already we've heard there were over 100 registrations about 30 minutes prior to play starting, so you'd think we are well on the way to a record ANZPT field here in Melbourne.

Team PokerStars will be represented today with Mexican Angel Guillen earning plenty of frequent flyer points to be out here for this event, along with PokerStars Team Asia Pro Bryan Huang.

Another racking up the FFP's is Brit Sam Razavi. Just two months ago Razavi spoiled the media with a lavish celebration dinner following his big win in the APPT/ANZPT Grant Final here at Crown. Since then Razavi has been to South America and Europe, and is now back down under after winning an online satellite on PokerStars. Can he go back to back?

He won't be flying under the radar so easily this time around, with plenty of Aussies out for revenge. Some of our finest expected to be in action today include 2009 APPT Sydney champion Aaron Benton, 2010 ANZPT Melbourne champ Martin Kozlov, ANZPT Player of the Year Mishel Anunu and reigning Aussie Millions champion Oliver Speidel.

Once again we'll be playing eight one-hour levels this evening with play set to wrap up around 9pm local time. The players will start with 20,000 in chips with the blinds at 50-100.

Stay tuned to the PokerStars Blog throughout the day as we bring you some of the lighter stories from behind the event while our friends at PokerNews bring you all the updates from the action on the floor.
