APPT9 Manila: Another big day ahead
For the last two days we've been talking about how big the APPT Manila tournament has been. Big fields, big prize pools and big excitement for those who have walked into the City of Dreams this week.
Today is also big, but for a different reason.
It's big for the 175 players who are returning to the Grand Ballroom. Today is the day that will determine if they go home with pain or profit.
Only 72 of our players will finish in the money. That means that the majority of the players who are currently unbagging their chips won't be swinging past the cashier on their way out today. A min-cash is worth PHP89,900, or just under US$2,000, which is certainly a handy collect for their efforts.
Once the bubble bursts, we'll be trying to get as close as we can to the APPT Manila final table this evening. Due to the size of the field, it appears unlikely that will happen today, but players can expect a full day in order to get as close to the final table as humanly possible.
Hopefully they are feeling fresh and ready for the long battle ahead of them. Looking around the tables, there are a few bleary eyes - no doubt suffering from the thumping Welcome Party that took place last night at the nearby nightclub Chaos. More on that a little later.
I'm sure they'll be bringing a little chaos to the tables this afternoon as they look to accumulate a big stack and chase the top prize of PHP6,016,250 (~US$131,000).
The man in best shape to achieve that feat is Korea's Dong Il Kim. Yesterday Kim was on fire. He took a few gambles with flush draws, and when they connected against big pairs, it resulted in Kim bagging up the chip lead with a massive 242,700 in chips.
Kim will be swimming today in waters full of sharks including former APPT Seoul champions Aaron Lim and Chane Kampanatsanyakorn, Team PokerStars Pros Celina Lin, Bryan Huang and Vivian Im, and the defending champion Thanh Ha Duong.
As the cards have just been launched in the air, we've received word from Danny McDonagh that we're looking at eleven levels today which might get us down to the final two tables. Settle in folks, we're in for a long day!
