Queenstown Snowfest: Aston looks to extend the advantage
The Day 2a flight is out of the way and the second group of 44 players have now found their seats in the SKYCITY Queenstown Casino to play the three levels of Day 2b.
A total of 23 players survived the Day 2a period, with 2009 ANZPT Sydney champion Michael Kanaan our likely chip leader with a stack over 200,000.
Another to survive earlier today was ANZ Player of the Year points leader Anthony Aston.
Aston has had a rollercoaster ride in this tournament. He lost half his stack in the first few levels of the tournament, and has struggled to get much of a stack going, but he's still alive and well after he bagged up around 34,000 a few minutes ago.
Aston is in a great position at the moment as he looks to extend his advantage at the top of the leaderboard. His two nearest rivals, Mishel Anunu and Didier Guerin, were both eliminated on day one while #5 ranked Gordon Huntly and #9 ranked Steve Lindeblad both missed this event.
Aston's closest competition in this event comes from #4 ranked Craig Blight and #6 ranked John Shin who are both in action in today's second flight after bagging up good stacks on day one.
Jason O'brien (#7), Liam O'Rourke (#8) and Stewart Ballard (#10) are also still in contention in this event.
So while Aston has a great opportunity to extend his lead at the top, a slip up here and a good result from any one of the top ten, will significantly change the standings heading into the ANZPT Grand Final in Melbourne, kicking off August 31st.
ANZ Player of the Year leaderboard
1 Anthony Aston - 117.89
2 Mishel Anunu - 105.80
3 Didier Guerin - 104.41
4 Craig Blight - 93.30
5 Gordon Huntly - 79.45
6 John Shin - 78.37
7 Jason O'brien - 72.20
8 Liam O'rourke - 69.45
9 Stephen Lindeblad - 69.15
10 Stewart Ballard - 65.10
The top two points winners at the end of the season will share in over $40,000 in PokerStars sponsorship, cash and prizes. For more details head to the ANZPT website.
Another survivor from Day 2a was PokerStars qualifier Ivan Zalac. Earlier today, PokerStars.tv hostess Nicki Pickering caught up with Zalac for a quick chat:
