ACOP Main Event Day 1b: Chasing Spadies

The team at PokerStars Macau are not afraid of innovation. They're happy to push the boundaries to see what is possible to attract new players into the PokerStars LIVE at the City of Dreams Poker Room. One innovation this year at the Asia Championship of Poker was a competition to come up with a nickname for the ACOP trophies.

"Trophies" or "Titles" is just so boring. PokerStars Macau wanted something fresh.

In the lead up to the ACOP, PokerStars Macau ran a competition on Twitter where poker fans could submit their favourite nickname for the trophies. Over 800 entries were received with the UK's Nickolas Kay (Twitter ID: @nickakay) awarded the winning entry (and a HK$25,000 ACOP Warm-Up package) for coming up with the term "Spadies", named after the playing card that is prominent on the trophies.

Spadies. Spadies. Spadies.

Are you a fan of the Spadies nickname? Whether it sticks or not remains to be seen, but there are a few players who are pretty fond of the term. They are the ones who now own their very own silver Spadie after winning one of the side events during the week.

The first Spadie went to Romania when Ioan Taizs won the Rebuy Championship, with Thomas Zhang, Andrew Jackling, Goel Apoorva and Hao Huang picking up Spadies in the first week of the championships.

Talented young Aussie Edison Nguyen (who is playing the Main Event today) grabbed a Spade in the Pot Limit Omaha event, while another Spadie will be heading down under with Ken Demlakian who won the KO Bounty Event.

Brian Shen and Yen Han Chen both won Spadies, while the heavily pregnant Jay Tan told us she's not allowed to play the gruelling Main Event, but she was still able to capture a Spadie for her bub in the Ladies Event.

Finally, there is Jian Yang from China who won a whopping HK$1,700,000 and a Spadie in the Warm-Up event just a few days ago.

Now we're at the big one. The ACOP Main Event, and the Spadie is no longer silver. It's gold!

Who will win the gold Spadie? And will the "Spadie" phrase stick? Time will tell!
