APPT7 Queenstown: Poker peaks
It is with great pleasure that we welcome you back to Queenstown in New Zealand for the APPT Queenstown Main Event -- the fourth stop of Season 7 of the tour. This boutique event has found its niche in the poker calendar with players coming far and wide to enjoy everything this wonderful town has to offer.
Some come for the poker, but for most, a trip to Queenstown presents so much more. The adventure capital of the world brings a plethora of fun activities away from the tables to ease the pain that elimination from the APPT Queenstown Main Event may bring.
Throughout the week we'll bring you some stories from around the town and hopefully get to enjoy a taste of Queenstown ourselves. The snow bunnies are a little disappointed that the unusually warm weather has confined the snow to the mountain peaks. SKYCITY Casino Shift Manager Andrew Gray assures us that just two weeks ago, the snow was down to lake level, but apparently the skiing conditions are still very good up on the mountains. That won't worry those of us sticking to town level, as the restaurants and bars are sure to be a hive of action late into the evenings, especially with the short days promised here in the Main Event.
For now we find ourselves in the warmth of the SKYCITY Queenstown Casino as Day 1a is not far away from kicking off. The Summit Room has been transformed into a poker den with five tables in action and likely to be at full capacity over the opening three flights. APPT Queenstown is one of the rare tournaments in the Asia-Pacific region that has shown steady growth with 149 players taking part last year as Australian Dave Allan collected the top prize of NZ$110,600.
There are plenty of big names in town, a couple of Team PokerStars Pros and we have some exciting announcements coming later today which will be of great interest to Australian and New Zealand poker fans. Stay tuned for more details!
Day 1a of the APPT Queenstown $3,000 Main Event kicks off at 12:30pm local time, and we look forward to your company throughout the week.
Last night, the players enjoyed themselves at the official welcome party where PokerStars.tv hostess Sarah Grant caught up with some of the players to find out what is the most adventurous thing they have ever done:
