EPT10 Sanremo: What comes first, the big win or the big watch?

What comes first, the big win or the big watch? Does the size of the watch indicate the type of opponent you are? Is an enormous, gold-plated sparkly thing, perhaps worth tens of thousands of dollars, still the most vivid warning that the wearer can play a bit? Looking around the tournament room there's evidence this trick still works.

Then again others of noted ability wear no watch at all. The naked wrists of Sorel Mizzi rest either side of 100,000 chips. It's actually his birthday today, but there was no new watch gift-wrapped and waiting for him this morning. It could be he's after the Slyde watch that accompanies the winner's check on Sunday.

Mizzi is one of a trio of Canadians on table 12. On his left is EPT Berlin High Roller winner Griffin Benger, while on his right is PCA finalist Shyam Srinivasan. They both have nice big watches.

Pius Heinz: watch or the win?

The three of them laugh a lot, and when Benger tried to order a Red Bull the other two remind him that it was in fact poisonous and that he should order black tea with lemon instead. Jeffrey Hakim wandered over to join in the high spirits. Hakim too has chips, and a big watch.

Elsewhere if Tom Hall was laughing it was only because he'd lost his mind after a car crash of a hand against no-live-results-on-Hendon-Mob Eros Nastase of Italy. Hall, who wears a fairly big watch, flopped a straight, turned a full house, but then ran into Nastase's straight flush on the river. Nastase wears a quite small gold Casio watch, while Hall can probably hear a bell tolling.

Maybe the jury is still out on this question after all, at least in Sanremo. Although there are a range of fake watches available on the street outside the Casino for those wishing to put this theory to the test.
