EPT Malta: Chidwick and Katchalov chop the €2k; Urbanovich falls just short

Stephen Chidwick has won the €2k event after he and Team PokerStars Pro Eugene Katchalov chopped the event heads-up. Chidwick took €102,100 while Katchalov got €92,400, the two then agreed to a flip for the title.

"One card face up?" asked Katchalov.

Chidwick turned over the 5♥ - not the best of starts but then Katchalov flipped over the 3♣.

The dealer put out a board of 6♣6♥K♠J♥8♠.

Stephen Chidwick

Katchalov said, "You go first, you're in the lead." Chidwick immediately pointed out he, like Katchalov was, at the moment, only playing the board. A tired Katchalov immediately broke into a fit of giggles. The Ukrainian player turned over his other card, it was the 5♣. Almost anything would do for Chidwick and he flipped over the A♦ to secure the title.

"That's not going to fit in the luggage," said Stephen's girlfriend, indicating the trophy.

In the €1k, around 60 players will return tomorrow at noon for Day 2. The floor staff decided to play an extra level, due to the late finishing of the €2k (which had almost the exact same structure). Simeon Naydenov looks to be the chip leader, the Bulgarian has 160,800 ahead of Ben Heath (148,800) and Ondej Vinklarek (137,700). Other players through to the second day include Team PokerStars Pro Marcin Horecki (39,100), IPT Malta winner Georgios Zisimopoulos (94,500), Vladimir Troyanovskiy (84,700) and Eureka4 Prague winner Balazs Botond (32,000).

Dzmitry Urbanovich

The €1k Limit Stud Championships saw a gruelling final table with Dzmitry Urbanovich falling just short of winning his fourth title at around 4am. The Polish player was desperate to take down another event but in the end he fell at the final hurdle losing to the American John Thrower. The latter took the title and €9,700 while Urbanovich, who was loudly railed by seven or eight friends for a couple of hours, received €6,680 as compensation. Nevertheless, it's still another final table for the Pole who has been the real breakout story here at the EPT Malta Festival.
