EPT Malta: Johnson wins the €2k IPT High Roller; Juniors/Seniors news
Eureka1 Prague champion Keith Johnson has won the Italian Poker Tour €2k High Roller at the EPT Malta Poker Festival after cutting a heads-up deal with German player Oliver Weis. The British player snagged €144,500 for his victory after carving his way through a very tough field on the final day.
Among those who cashed in the event, which attracted 473 players with a €917,620 prize pool, were three-time WSOP bracelet winner Dominik Nitsche (4th for €63,320), Artur Koren (5th, €13,850), Pierre Neuville (6th, €39,200) and Ludovic Geilich (10th, €13,850). There were 63 players in the money including Andrea Benelli, Mike Watson, Team PokerStars Pro Christophe De Meulder, Michel Abecassis, Tom Hall, 2014 WSOP ME champion Martin Jacobson and Sergio Aido. Johnson joins five other champions from Season 11 who have won six-figures in the regional 2k High Roller event, Louis Salter (Prague €124,560), Henrick Hecklen (Barcelona, €293,000), Olivier Busquet (London, £107,300) and Vladimir Troyanovskiy (Deauville, €141,000).
Youth and experience both got a showing last night with the €200 Seniors' and €200 Juniors' events. Peder Behr of Sweden won the Seniors, picking up €6,000 after defeating a field of 122 players. EPT Prague winner Salvatore Bonavena, EPT Prague finalist Mickey Norinder and EPT Kyiv runner-up Alexander Dovzhenko were all among those who played.
The Juniors' event was also won by a Swede, 20-year-old Karl Jansson who took the trophy and the first prize of €2,070 after defeating a field of 26 youngsters. Jansson beat fellow 20-year-old Nicolo Serlenga from Italy in the heads-up battle.
Tuesday sees a packed day with five tournaments getting under way. The biggest is expected to be the two-day €2,000 starting at 4pm, for those without the bankroll, there is a €150 1R or 1A satellite to said event at 11am. Other events scheduled are the €500 Turbo at 12.30pm and the €1k EPT Razz Championships 8-handed event at 3pm. There is also the popular €200 Turbo Deepstack Deuces Wild at 9.15pm while the day will finish off with a €500+€500 HyperTurbo Bounty Win the Button 6-Handed Event (and yes, that is a lot to type) which begins at midnight.
