EPT11 Grand Final: The annual Scott Clements Triple Crown update
Scott Clements is wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with the slogan 'one time' but in his case it'd be more accurate if it said 'two times'as Clements is going deep in this Main Event for the second year in succession. In 2014 he finished 20th and at the time of writing he's one of 21 players who've still got chips this time around.
With two WSOP bracelets and two WPT titles to his name were Clements to win here in Monaco he'd become the sixth member of the Triple Crown club, joining Gavin Griffin, Roland De Wolfe, Jake Cody, ElkY and Davidi Kitai in that particular exclusive group. "It'd be awesome to win here and complete the triple crown," he told us. "They're all great players but I think my buddy Mo is the favourite to become the next Triple Crown winner."
The American was referring to Moshin Charania, who won the Grand Final in Season 8, and also has two WPT titles. That means he's bracelet hunting this summer to complete the set and pure maths says he has the edge over Clements. There are 68 bracelet events in Las Vegas whereas there are only six or seven EPT events each season. What's more due to having a family Clements rarely travels to Europe for tournaments. Indeed since his deep run here in 2014 he's only played one EPT and that was the PCA.
Clements has somewhat flown under the radar this week - although you suspect that's the way he likes it - and it's only today he's featured on the #EPTLive coverage and he's now sat next to Team PokerStars Pro Johnny Lodden, who has also cashed in this event two years in a row. Whilst we were observing Clements on one of the outer tables he was doing a lot of folding and although his attention was sometimes taken up by his iPad, for the most part he was a picture of concentration. His eyes darted to whichever player action was on as he looked for information for use in future hands.
Even the way he Clements folds is done with a minimum of fuss and effort. He simply slides his cards along the felt towards the dealer in a perfunctory manner. No exaggerated card toss or extravagant flick of the wrist is necessary here. He appears completely in the zone and focused on the task at hand. It's currently going pretty well for Clements as he lies sixth in chips with a stack of around 900,000 (56.25 big blinds). For a man like Clements, that's plenty.
