EPT12 Barcelona: Sorting through the sides

They've played the first nine 45-minute levels of Day 1B of the Estrellas Barcelona Main Event, and having now returned from the dinner break for Level 10, there are 559 players left from the 1,122 who began the day.

The young Spaniard Pablo Gordillo (whom we were looking in on not long ago) was the clear chip leader at the dinner break, having spun back up to around 300,000, with Italy's Alberto Marangoni (240,000) and Argentina's Juan Franco (205,000) the next closest chip-wise.

There are three more levels to go for that group, after which we'll see who among them will be joining the 166 Day 1A survivors for Saturday's Day 2 (with Day 1C coming in between), and if Gordillo or any others manage to exceed Day 1A leader Fernando Heredia's top stack of 336,200.

Before we get there, though, let's have ourselves a swing through the other five events comprising the day's EPT Barcelona schedule.

Two of those events were super satellites, the first (Event #12) being a €200 try for a seat in tomorrow's Estrellas Day 1C. A total of 149 played in that one, with the top 26 finishers earning seats.

The other super satellite (Event #14) is ongoing, a €1K event awarding seats into the €5K EPT Main Event. That one drew 201 players, with the top 36 finishers due to earn seats.

Flights 1C and 1D of Barcelona Cup (Event #7) are playing out today, the third and fourth of six starting flights for the €300 buy-in event that allows those busting to enter subsequent flights as long as they last. Each flight is drawing increasing fields, with 1A attracting 141 (from which 21 survived) and 1B drawing 229 (from which 35 made it) yesterday, then 1C today having 290 play (with 44 getting through).

The fourth one, Flight 1D, has already seen more than 400 enter, which means that prize pool continuing to expand as well.

That leaves two events, one of which -- the €1K NL Hyperturbo (Event #15) -- will be starting shortly. The other is that €5K 8-game mix (Event #13) we were discussing earlier, the one that drew an especially talented 29-player field.

They are down to seven over in the Marquee Room right now, with only the top five spots getting paid. Team PokerStars Pro Theo Jorgensen is one of those still in the hunt for one of the tougher silver spade trophies to claim thus far.
