IPT Malta: Tran leads Day 1b; Palmieri leads overall

Do Chung Tran began today as one of over 900 players hoping to make it past the first of several hurdles to what was likely to be the biggest prize in IPT history. Roughly 12 hours later, the Germa player was the chip leader of Day 1b finishing off with 278,000. Tran's previous best result was when he came 28th at Eureka4 Vienna for €5,570. He leads ahead of Benjamin Davo (241,700) and Jari Mahonen (203,700).

Chip leader Do Chung Tran

Tran told us how he won a big three-way all-in with aces against Salvatore Bonavena's kings and a short stack's pocket sevens. The main pot was not particularly notable in size but the side pot against EPT winner Bonavena was worth nearly 150,000.

Team PokerStars Pro saw four members enter this record-breaking event and three managed to make it through, Jan Heitmann (66,100), Christophe De Meulder (61,600) and Mathias De Meulder (18,800). Only Julien Brecard missed out, suffering an early exit. The Frenchman still plans to spend a little bit more time in Malta, he's filming reality poker series La Maison du Bluff here on the island.

Second in chips, Benjamin Davo

With a little less than 400 remaining from the Day 1b field, they'll be joining the Day 1a survivors tomorrow from 12pm CET meaning over 500 will return for Day 2. If you're looking for the seat draw and chip counts then the first place they'll appear will be on the EPT App. Get it now for Android or IOS.
