EPT10 Barcelona: A smile, a selfie, then serious business

With a new room full of players in place EPT President Edgar Stuchly did the honours for a second time, welcoming everyone to their first day of the new season, and thanking them for their continued support.

His greetings are accompanied by a short introductory video played on the big screens surrounding the tournament area, one of flashing images of past winners, snippets from big hands and the players who played them. To anyone knew to this game it's the perfect way to inject some adrenaline into your system - if anyone were needed. To veterans of the tour it's like watching your life flash in front of your eyes without actually drowning.

But it does the trick, a pertinent reminder of what's at stake, although the nervous faces around the tournament room tell the story even more clearly.

That doesn't apply to everyone of course. Liv Boeree waved to the cameras as she arrived to take her place, smiling and the picture of poise. Daniel Negreanu, walking at "Negreanu speed", which is about time and a half the regulation pace, was also grinning as he took up his seat. The player on his left immediately introduced himself and asked for a quick photo -- a "selfie" that will make them look like the best of friends for ever.

Moments later the day begins - eight levels on what could become a record breaking day. More on that later.
