EPT8 Campione: Chasing the double crown

ept-thumb-promo.jpgEPT winners are selfish. There have been 81 European Poker Tour main events, each of which have had a player's name chiselled into the history books, yet they've all conspired to leave the PokerStars Blog repeatedly banging out copy about an 'historic first double EPT winner'. And here we go again.

This morning 99 players returned, eight of whom were on for the double. The bubble burst, 88 players remained, eight of whom were still on for the double. Moments later Rupert Elder (San Remo, S7) bust in 88th, the first into the cash and just minutes after that Bertrand 'ElkY' Grospellier (PCA, S4) ran kings into aces to leave himself short, he busted out just a little later. We were down to six.

  • Slam door
  • Repeat until consciousness is lost or one of the remaining six wins EPT Campione

Then Martin Finger went, sent to the rail by Team PokerStars Pro Liv Boeree, another former champ. Now into the early forays of level 18 we have five remaining from 53. The dream, for the moment, lives on. It's just our vision that's beginning to fade. While we're bludgeoning ourselves into a coma you can peruse quick profiles of those eight players.

Liv Boeree

Boeree currently has 215,000, no mean feat given she was down to just 8,000 yesterday. News just in, she's out. Check the live feed for details.

Nicolas Chouity
Live winnings: $2,671,544
Position in Lebanon all-time money list: 1st
EPT final tables: 1
EPT main event cashes: 5

It's been a couple of years since Nicolas 'niccc' Chouity won the EPT Grand Final but the man from Lebanon is still hungry for success. Chouity looks calm and assured with 250,000.

Rupert Elder
Live winnings: $1,537,602
Position in England all-time money list: 32nd
EPT final tables: 1
EPT main event cashes: 4

Elder bust just into the money after, as he admitted, misplaying a couple of hands in the run-up to the bubble. Despite that he managed to rally long enough to claim a €7,500 min-cash. He will not be the double winner here in Campione.

Martin Finger
Live winnings: $1,069,454
Position in German all-time money list: 24th
EPT final tables: 1

Finger was knocked out by fellow EPT champ Boeree in 67th for a min-cash. He was last seen hobbling into a side event on crutches.

Bertrand 'ElkY Grospellier
Live winnings: $8,761,480
Position in France all-time money list: 1st
EPT final tables: 2
EPT main event cashes: 11

ElkY claimed that he had played 'perfect' but sometimes that's just not good enough. You know, like when the cards conspire against you. The bleached poker hero was crippled by a cooler and eliminated when his pocket sixes were beaten by a raggy ace. It's no way for an EPT champ to go...

Ronny Kasier
Live winnings: $957,462
Position in Switzerland all-time money list: 4th
EPT final tables: 1
EPT main event cashes: 2

Kaiser, who has been killing it in online cash games we hear, had peaked at around 600,000 but is now packing a more conservative 390,000 stack. It's still a good amount, dangerous in the hands of this aggressive high stakes player. Kaiser could certainly make a deep run here.

Robert Romanello
Live winnings: $2,502,082
Position in Wales all-time money list: 2nd
EPT final tables: 2
EPT main event cashes: 8

Welsh-Italian chatterbox Romanello is just above average with 310,000 and is also doing himself no harm in the EPT Player of the Year leader board in which he sits second to Ondrej Vinklarek (pronounced on-jay vin-klar-rek).

David Vamplew
Live winnings: $1,890,152
Number in Scotland all-time money list: 1st
EPT final tables: 1
EPT main event cashes: 3

David Vamplew has been towards the top of the chip counts since the end of Day 1 and now sits on a stack of around 450,000. The Scotsman has proved himself to be steady and relentless. It's hard to see him not making the final 24 unless a series of coolers conspire against him.
