EPT9 Sanremo: A day for the excitable masochist

ept-thumb-promo.jpgUnderwhelment comes easily to tournament poker reporters. Most of us have seen hundreds of champions crowned, making it incrementally more difficult to be thrilled by that moment of triumph at the end of six exhausting days - no matter how many tears are shed, champagne corks popped or items of disastrous gaudy designer apparel taken off the peg.

But bubble time is something different. Although we have seen as many bubbles as we have final tables, the former somehow still manages to generate a buzz of excitement. This is the moment, remember, where at least 100 people celebrate in unison (in Sanremo it will be 120) at the precise moment that one player is crushed through the ground. That man or woman will know that for all their hard work over multiple days, they might as well have busted on the first hand.

Bubble time has just enough jubilation for the excitable and enough human torment for the masochist. Yep, jaded poker tournament reporters enjoy bubble time. We cannot get enough.

That moment will happen in Sanremo today, where 152 players are currently returning to play day three of the €5,000 main event. There will be 31 of them leaving with nothing but a sense of mild disappointment, while one unfortunate soul will leave with nothing but an all-consuming, crippling sense of worthlessness and anxiety. The remaining 120 will all be in the money, guaranteed a return of at least €8,000.

At start of play, all are looking up Inge Forsma, who has more than 100,000 chips more than his closest rivals, Charly Marrachione and Jason Tompkins. But this field is still absolutely stacked. You don't even need to read very far through the table draw to see that: Justin Bonomo, Rupert Elder and Michael Watson share table one, David Vamplew, Ana Marquez and Yevgeniy Timoshenko are on number two. And so on.

Play started at 2pm local time and we will now play 90-minute levels, with 20-minute breaks after each. We will likely play either four or five of them before bagging for the day.
