LAPT Vina del Mar: Costa Rican Royalty

While the field will have to shrink a bit more before the Brenes family has to worry about being seated together, paterfamilias Humberto was recently moved to a table that already boasts two members of Costa Rica's poker royalty. Brenes is now seated to the left of the "first lady" of Costa Rican poker, WSOP bracelet winner Maria Stern who most recently finished eighth on Season 2's San Jose stop. She, in turn, is seated to the left of Steven Thompson, a San Jose final tablist from Season 1 who is also boasting quite the interesting hairstyle today.

Naturally, such a lineup has drawn a crowd of spectators and media alike. Moments ago, we heard a cry of "The chark is hunnnnngry!" as Brenes moved his entire stack into the pot from the small blind over the top of a late position player's opening raise. Cue the majority of the room rushing over to his table.

Brenes' opponent tanked for a few moments, the crowd edging in closer in anticipation of a huge confrontation. However, he elected to fold, open-mucking Ad-Qc and conceding the pot to Brenes, who now sits on about 18,000 in chips.

As the crowd dispersed and action resumed, Brenes remained ever the showman, singing along to Spanish-language pop music on his iPod as he stacked his chips, his shark well-fed.

Unfortunately for Brenes, he wouldn't last much longer, breaking up not only the Costa Rican trifecta at his table, but becoming the first member of his family to be eliminated from the tournament. Humberto got his stack all in with As-Ac against his opponent's Kd-Ks, but the board ran out a devastating Td-Jd-Ad-3d-Kc, Brenes flopping top set, but his opponent turning the flush. Brenes exited the room to a flurry of applause and is still posing for photos with fans on the rail as we prepare to go on dinner break.
