LAPT Vina del Mar: Summertime stars
While our fellow PokerStars bloggers shiver through a French winter, we here in Chile had a day to enjoy a Chilean summer. After a Monday of sunburns, 90 degree weather, and southern hemisphere sweating, it's now time to get to the poker. Chilean skies show us a different pattern of stars. This makeshift Chilean poker room shows us we have a different batch of PokerStars as well.
You'll be hearing about the notables all day long (you can also see a list of some famous folks on our LAPT Vina del Mar chip counts page). For now, though, we want to turn our attention to one particular bright point in the room.
Of all the 213 people in today's event who have made tons of cash playing poker, Team PokerStars Pro Alex Gomes probably made the most money most recently.
If you are a regular reader, you will remember Gomes made a deep and exciting run in the 2009 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure. He was second place in chips four-handed when disaster struck. Holding pocket aces, he saw a J-J-J flop against Germany's Benny Spindler. Spindler happened to be holding K-J. Despite the soul-crushing beat, Gomes smiled afterward and is still smiling today.
Maybe it's the fact he won $750,000 that keeps him happy, or maybe it's just part of his Brazilian nature. Either way, he's a pleasure to be around.
Gomes and the other 25 tables full of people are now moving on to Level 2 and 50-100 blinds.
