lapt-promo.gif For the second day in a row, Sade's "Smooth Operator" is softly crooning at us from the overhead speakers at the Casino Allegre. For the second day in a row, the tournament staff are gathered around a few of the poker tables, trading humorous barbs the way only long-time friends can before starting a long day of work. And for the second day in a row, the 2012 PokerStars.net Latin American Poker Tour Colombia Main Event will welcome a Day 1 flight at noon local time in Medellin, Colombia.

It's hard to avoid those Groundhog Day comparisons when covering tournaments with multiple Day 1 flights. For the staff and the writers, it feels like we're stuck in mud a little bit. For the players, of course, it's an entirely new experience. None of the players that will join us today were at the tables yesterday. They're all starting their LAPT5 Colombia journey today.

Speaking of yesterday, the Day 1a flight drew 115 "jugadores", as they say in this part of the world. Tournament staff have told us they're expecting about double that number of jugadores in today's Day 1b flight. Like their counterparts yesterday, today's field will play 10 one-hour levels, with about 1/3 of the starters surviving to come back tomorrow for the combined Day 2 field.

The pole position is currently occupied by PokerStars Team Online player Freddy Torres, who nosed out Brazil's Fellipe Nunes by bagging 122,000 chips last night. It marked the second year in a row that Torres led the Day 1a field here in Medellin. Last year, despite that strong start, Torres didn't make the money. We'll see if he's able to change that up this year.

For the second year in a row, Torres was in fine form on Day 1a

That's a tale for tomorrow. For today, we're curious who's going to show up, what they're going to do, and if anybody is going to accumulate more chips than Torres did yesterday. Sorel Mizzi tried yesterday but failed. He and John Tabatabai talked about their LAPT experience yesterday with PokerStars.tv. I had to laugh when Mizzi said, "You can see people are having fun. I've never seen so many slow rolls in my life."

While you watch that, we'll be finishing our Day 1b prep. The one thing we absolutely promise is that today's prep won't include any more hot dogs.
