Coming soon: Macau Poker Cup

ps_news_thn.jpgThe Macau Poker Cup (MPC) series returns to PokerStars Macau at Casino Grand Lisboa as players get ready for the MPC May Special from May 13-15. The HKD $5,000 Main Event on Saturday carries a HKD $250,000 guarantee and is book ended by the $2,000 KO Bounty and $1,500 Deepstack on Friday and Sunday respectively. All three tournaments are Official Asia Player of the Year (APOY) events and current no. 1 ranked APOY, Hung-Sheng "Shaq" Lin, is expected in the field after a 1-month break from his Macau Millions victory.

The May Special weekend plays prelude to a super-charged Macau Poker Cup schedule which takes place a fortnight later. February's MPC had 1,579 participants through 6 events and awarded HKD $7,780,280 (USD $1,000,000) worth of prize money in the process. PokerStar player Mark Benasa from the Philippines became the first Filipino player to win the Red Dragon main event and took home HKD $1,100,000. Benasa is currently ranked no. 2 for APOY.

Due to the overwhelming success, Asia's premiere poker series received a schedule make-over to give players even more value for their visit to Macau. There are now 8 featured events that count towards the APOY.

"In Macau Poker Cup's early days it was just 3 days of tournaments on Friday, Saturday and Sunday." says Danny McDonagh, PokerStars Director of Live Operations for Asia-Pacific. "It's been an amazing journey to see it now expanded to a 9-day schedule. It just shows how much we've progressed and grown. The MPC has a wide variety of buy-ins and this schedule appeals to poker players of every bankroll with the introduction of the High Rollers and $6,000 events.

Confirmed in the field are Team PokerStars Pros Celina Lin, Raymond Wu, and 2010 APOY winner Bryan Huang. Benasa is also expected to defend his Red Dragon title in attempts to reclaim the top position for the APOY award where the eventual winner receives a 1-year sponsorship with PokerStars Macau.
