MPC Red Dragon: Wang rises to the lead in Day 1B

The sun has set on another day at the Red Dragon.

This metaphorical sun seems to run counter to the real, giant ball of gas that gives us heat light and life. The Red Dragon sun rose at 7pm and shined poker, chips and non-stop action on 288 players who showed up for Day 1B.

The sun also filled the room with carnage and finally set after 11 and a half levels. With the day concluded, only 78 players remain. The player to come out on top of these survivors is Zhenwu Wang, with 161,700.

Zhenwu Wang

Wang is familiar with the feeling of having a large stack in the Red Dragon. Just this past January, Wang finished runner-up in this event. Now he's back and leading the Day 1B crowd.

Today's crowd was much larger than the tournament staff expected. They were hoping to break the 200 mark, but we nearly made it up to 300. This puts the total unique entries for the Red Dragon at 497.

The tournament is now on track to beat its own record for largest poker tournament in Asia. The Red Dragon set the record in February 2012 when it drew 635 unique players. Now, we're only 139 more entries away from beating that record. Day 1C tends to be the largest day, so odds are fairly good that we'll exceed that number.

Tomorrow will also bring more Red Dragon madness. This tournament is quick and ruthless. Several players, including Johnny Chan, Alex Niu and Team PokerStars Pro Celina Lin started the day but would hit the rail before it was over.

But their chips had went to someone.

While Wang holds the most of the day with 161,700, several players crossed the six-figure chip mark. Ka Ho Chiu finished in a close second with 150,600 and seven more players finished with more than 100,000.

Team PokerStars Pro Vivian Im also became the first Team Pro to survive Day 1 this Red Dragon. Im even held the chip lead at one point and managed to finish the day with 54,200. For a full list of the other chip counts, check out our chip counts page.

We still have one more Day 1 to go and we're expecting more action and big names. Team PokerStars Pro Bryan Huang, Team PokerStars Online Naoya Kihara, Joseph Cheong and Lacey Jones are all expected to make appearances later today.

Day 1C starts in under 13 hours and we'll get official numbers, including the prize pool all these players are after.

Now go get some rest, tomorrow will be packed with action.
