ACOP Platinum Series VIII
The 'PokerStars LIVE Macau' poker room was established back in 2008 yet no local player has managed to win a Main Event in six-plus years.
That all changed this past weekend when Macau's Sam Cheong became the official winner of the ACOP Platinum Series VIII Main Event. The 32-year old defeated the 233-player field and was awarded HK$252,146 for his victory. In total, 27 players cashed for a share of the HK$1,050,946 prize pool.
Cheong certainly wasn't the favourite heading into the final table that included Beijing Cup winner Yang Zhang, Sparrow Cheung, and reigning Asia Player of the Year Pete Chen.
Zhang was the first to hit the rail in ninth place while Cheung and Chen finished in sixth and fifth place respectively.
The heads-up match would ultimately come down to two players - Cheong and China's Bote Lin - who were both making their first recorded tournament cash.
With an overwhelming 1.7m to 5k chip lead, the final hand saw Cheong move all-in from the button and Lin calling with his remaining chips.
Cheong : 8♥5♦
The board ran A♣8♣9♦J♦9♣ to clinch the title for Cheong who works in the real estate industry.
