MPC23: Shashank shoots ahead on Day 1d

Poker in Macau continues to boom as the summer edition of the Macau Poker Cup Red Dragon was blown out of the water tonight.

After four flights Day 1 is officially in the books.

An impressive 427 entrants ponied up the HK$12,000 buy in today, and combined with the other three flights the tournament total grew to 945 total runners. In the same event this time last year we only saw 808 entrants hit the felt. That's a significant increase in a tournament that seems to only continue gaining popularity.

Of the 427 today, only 100 now remain. Out in front is India's Shashank Jain who finished the day by bagging up 171,400 in chips. That number makes Jain the overall leader going in to Day 2. Some other frontrunners include China's Zhe Zhang on 164,400 and Thailand's Anek Phithaksinghsakul with 158,400.

These lucky 10 are among the 213 still left in the Red Dragon race. For others though, they'd fall short of Day 2. Team PokerStars Pros Bryan Huang and Chen-An Lin found the rail today. Both got in to flips with ace-king against pocket jacks for their tournament lives and couldn't improve.

Notables Aaron Lim, Raiden Kan and former Red Dragon champions Terry Fan and Raymond Wu were some of those who couldn't hold on today. They'll have to wait until next time for another shot at the MPC feature event.

For the 213 survivors, however, it's back tomorrow as they edge closer to the 117 paying positions and ultimately the HK$2,108,000 to prize.

Day 2 begins at 3:00pm Wednesday here at the City of Dreams casino. We'll be bringing all the action to you live and we hope you can join us here on the PokerStars Blog.
