UKIPT Coventry: The second half kicks off
Football is a game of two halves and so is the UKIPT day 1 here at the Ricoh Arena, home to Coventry City Football Club. The first half played out yesterday with some major goal mouth action courtesy of Alex Jackson, a 20-year student who is our day 1a chip leader. Jackson came out on top of the 191 starting field with a heaving 116,100 stack. Today the field is expected to sell out so at the end of the nine one-hour levels a chip leader with an even larger stack is likely to emerge.
Star strikers taking to the pitch this morning includes Team PokerStars Pros Victoria Coren and Jude Ainsworth. Their fellow Team Pro Julian Thew didn't make the cut yesterday getting roughly knocked out by Jonathan Butters after getting his tens in against kings. No suck out and it was a red card for Thew.
Yesterday was as smooth as smooth can be but it's likely today will have a bit more fire in its belly. A lot of the good, bad and ugly of the UK poker scene has elected to play today with the likes of Paul Jackson, Marc Goodwin, Surinder Sunar, recent Irish open winner James Mitchell and EPT winner Jake Cody seen wandering the casino floor prior to kick-off. Players start with 15,000 chips playing one-hour levels starting at 25-50 which slowly cranks up through 50-100 and 75-150. There's more than enough room for creative playmakers to throw some feints and pull some stepovers before having to recklessly throw themselves into some two-footed challenges later in the day. Play is due to start at 2pm. Shuffle and deal.
