WSOP Event #49: HORSE off to slow start
If we were the type of people to hit the equine references early and often, we would use this opportunity to say something about the big HORSE stumbling out of the gates. But since we've sworn off such writing for this event, we'll just let it rest like this: The $50,000 HORSE event is having a tough time getting underway.
Though the exact details and reasons behind it are still not easily defined, the early registration numbers for the event are lower than normal. In fact, so few players had registered at the scheduled noon start time, the start of play was delayed for an hour. Now that the event is off and running, many tables are playing short-handed as late arrivals straggle in. Registration remains open for another few hours, but as of this hour, only sixty-seven players have registered.
A quick walk through the tournament finds Team PokerStars Pros Daniel Negreanu and Chad Brown. Friend of PokerStars Bill Chen has also ponied up his $50,000 and is in action today. Barry Greenstein, who is going to be otherwise occupied this afternoon, has not yet taken a seat.
Fans currently line the rails four deep to get a look at some of the top players in the game. They will be able to watch six 90-minute levels today, the first of this five-day event.
Though it took some time to get running, there is no turning back on the event now. 2008's HORSE champ Scotty Nguyen just took the microphone and said in a way only he can, "Dealers, shuffle up and deal, baby."
