WSOP Main Event: Roll out the red carpet
Former basketball pro John Salley's day began with a photo shoot in the Joe Hachem lounge, one shot featuring him with a shark biting at his neck. The shark, naturally, was held their by Team PokerStars Pro Humberto Brenes who wasn't finished there, grabbing Lou Diamond Phillips next who was happy to jump in on a few more for the Brenes family album. All this was part of a get together for the PokerStars celebrity players arriving to take their seats in the busiest of day ones.
Who else? Actor and comedian Marlon Wayans of Scary Movie fame is in the blue section. He's already been mixing things up, tangling in pots with an expression of fierce dedication on his face at every stage of the hand. He lost the latest one, mucking his cards with a simple "damn" before gearing up for the next.
Two tables along sits Jordan Farmar, chewing gum like the LA Lakers NBA Champion that he is. To the layman (me) he looks too short to be a pro basketball player but didn't someone say that Chris Moneymaker was too amateur to win the main event? Regardless Farmer's draw places him on the immediate right of former champion Robert Varkonyi.
Back in the orange area of the Amazon Room Torrie Wilson smiles her way through the opening level, politely laughing at the comments her table mates chip in, all of them very recent converts to female wrestling. This may be Wilson's first main event but what she lacks in experience she makes up in being able to head drop anyone attempting to steal her blind.
Only Lou diamond Phillips is outside the Amazon Room, tucked away in the Miranda with several hundred others, riffling chips and looking through reading glasses at his cards. This may be the Young Gun star's first main event - work had kept him away before - but he's no stranger to big tournament poker having played WPT events in the past, as well as final tables at the Commerce in Los Angeles. He intends to stick around.
