WSOP Main Event Day 4: The day of the bubble

wsop2010_thn.jpgAs a team of poker reporters with 20 years combined experience in the business, we have seen a lot of bubbles. We've researched the various phenomena that go along with the day that players make the money in a big tournament. We've coined phrases related to bubble day (Howard Swains' "Bubble Up" is pending a trademark). We've seen a lot of dreams crushed. We've seen a lot of people smile.

We still love bubble day at the WSOP.

Like a city winning a sports championship, a political party winning an election, or fans of Justin Bieber getting a chance to see him for 30 seconds on television, when the bubble bursts in the WSOP Main Event, it's like a giant happy bomb explodes and gets a giant smiling mess over a crowd of nearly eight hundred people. Back in the psychedelic Timothy Leary years, the proponents of of higher consciousness dreamed of dosing an entire city's water supply. If they'd only known about the WSOP Happy Bomb, they would never have had to look any further.

Just a few more than 1,200 players are on their way in to play Day 4 of the WSOP. They are all in search of the bracelet and $8,944,138 first prize. First, they need to make the money. That will happened when we reach the number 747 and not before.

We're still culling our lists, but we know of at least 164 players who have made it through to Day 4, including eleven Team PokerStars Pros and two members of Team Online. Not only that, but today's chip leader, James Carroll is a proud PokerStars player we'll be watching.

Team PokerStars Pro will be led today by Johnny Lodden. With more than 656,000 chips, he is not too far of the chip lead. He'll be joined by JP Kelly, Angel Guillen, Vanessa Selbst, Marcin Horecki, Humberto Brenes, Jason Mercier, Greg DeBora, William Thorson, Barry Greenstein, Pieter De Korver, Andre Coimbra, and Jorge Arias.

We also have several qualifiers remaining who have some neat stories to tell.

  • David Villiard (USA) Jose Paz (Bolivia) both won their seats in $11 Rebuy tourneys on PokerStars.
  • William Klevitz (USA) is a GoldStar member of the PokerStars VIP Club who won his seat in the 10,000 FPP Freeroll on June 20th.
  • Marius Olsvik (Norway), James Gaffney (USA),Thompson Sullivan (USA) are all SuperNovas who won their seats in the special 40,000 FPP Freeroll for Supernovas on June 20th.
  • No telling how long it will take to make the money today, but you can feel sure that by the time we go to bed tonight, there are going to be a lot of happy people at the WSOP.

Standby for the action. It all kicks off in a few minutes.

    Two words: Happy Bomb.
