WSOP 2017: nano-oh no! Randy Lew busts Main Event, ends PokerStars' run

The news reached us from two different sources simultaneously. Poker News' ace reporters (come on, king at worst; OK, jack) told us that nanonoko's chair was empty. Right about then, a WhatsApp message came from the man himself.

"I busted 99v AK. I 3bet shoved sb v co"

And with that, Randy Lew's 2017 World Series of Poker Main Event was over. He was out in 159th place earning $53,247, a maiden Main Event cash in the only tournament he played here this year but not the multi-million payday that anyone pulling up a seat for this tournament dreams of.

Randy Lew's elimination ends Red Spade involvement

Truth be told, Lew may not have really been dreaming of that. He told me this morning that he hadn't been sleeping too well ("It's Vegas") but also that poker doesn't dominate his thinking these days. Having put the hours in for a couple of lifetimes, Lew had actually interrupted his round-the-world trip to play the World Series.

He was in the kind of spiritual mood that global travellers can sometimes inhabit, feeling the positive vibes from the poker gods. They turned out to be cruel to Lew today, but there was time for one last nanonoko spot of dry humour.

"I guess I was spewing bullshit to you after all, he said. Lol."

Lew has kept us all entertained this week with his wry take on high stakes live tournament poker. As he leaves us, and as we lower the Red Spade down the flagpole for this World Series, let's take another look back on the nanonoko Main Event, as described by the man himself:

etc. etc.

GG nanonoko. See you next year.
