Sydney. Home of the Harbour Bridge. The Opera House. Bondi Beach. King’s Cross. And this week, it’s the host city for the next stop on Season 6 of the Australia New Zealand Poker Tour.

Over the years, Sydney has been home to some of the biggest moments seen in Australian poker. Grant Levy was the first Australian to win one million dollars on home soil back when he won in Sydney in 2007. Then it was Full Tilt Ambassador Jonathan Karamalikis who rocked the roof off The Star casino when he won the APPT Sydney title in 2010.

Sydney has also hosted some of the biggest ANZPT events in the history of the tour.

Back in 2009 a massive field of 493 players were conquered by Paren Arzoomanian (pictured below). That number remains a record for a $2,200 ANZPT event in this country. Could that all change in 2014?

Indications are we’re set for another monstrous field here in Sydney. On the ANZPT Facebook page it was announced earlier this week that over 140 qualifiers had already won their seats online. With online and live satellites running throughout the week and a throng of locals expected, we could nudge a total of 500 players and the magical one million dollar prize pool.

The first opportunity for players will come a little later today with Day 1A of the ANZPT Sydney Main Event kicking off at the working-man-friendly timeslot of 6:15pm (GMT+10).

A little earlier than that there’s a wonderfully warm Autumn day in Sydney to greet our players at the Leichhardt Bowling & Recreation Club where the official ANZPT Sydney Lawn Bowls tournament will take place. Everyone is welcome to come along and try their luck, and there’s event a spade trophy to be awarded to the winner. After his victory in the Queenstown Frisbee Golf Tournament and the Melbourne Oyster Eating Challenge, we’re no doubt expecting PokerStars Team Online Pro Roy Bhasin to complete the elusive prop-betting triple crown this afternoon.

Lawn bowls and poker are not the only two sporting spectacles on offer this week with Sydney also hosting two historic Major League Baseball games this weekend at the SCG.

We’ll have updates from the lawn bowls, the baseball and of course, a little poker for you throughout the week right here on the PokerStars Blog. Stay tuned!
