Poker is a game of cruelties. Poor cards, bad beats, losing pots. However even worse that the pain of seeing your aces cracked is the thought of playing a major tournament main event for days, only to fall short of the money and be sent home with nothing to show for your efforts.

Some tournaments can go endure many days of grinding before a player will receive a profit. That’s not normally something we see on the Australia New Zealand Poker Tour, but here at the ANZPT Perth, that’s exactly what’s about to unfold.

A huge field of 256 entrants, combined with some generously short days means that we’re going to have a chuck of players reach Day 3 of the tournament and still go home empty-handed. We’re starting Day 2 with 145 survivors and with just six levels of play scheduled for today, we’re going to be well short of the money for the top 27 players by the day’s end.

While the short stacks aren’t looking at early flights just yet, that conundrum shouldn’t bother our chip leaders. Brian McAllister enters today with the only stack above 100,000, while Andy Hinrichsen, Dale Marsland, Luke Brabin and ANZPT Auckland champ David Lim are all still very much in contention.

There’s also a group of players who are nursing very sore heads this morning after last night’s Player’s Party rolled into a Karaoke session that ended at 6:30am. We won’t name any names but in an unrelated update Tom Grigg starts today with 41,050 in chips and Mile Krstanoski has 24,700 chips. Liam O’Rourke was eliminated on Day 1.

Other notables still in contention include Aaron Lim, Oliver Gill, Stev Lackovic, Nathan Gubieski, Sal Fazzino, Ash Warner, Tristian Bain, James Broom, Pat Crivell, Tony Tartaglia, Gary Benson and Jesse McKenzie.
