When we say that a huge crowd gathered around the rails of the Crown Perth Poker Room at the start of the ANZPT Perth Main Event this evening, we would not be exaggerating. Far from it. There were several hundred people packed in every corner of the gaming floor around the poker tables and our blogging desk. They came from the Blackjack tables. They walked over from the Pokies. They even wandered in from the high-rolling Pearl Room.

As the clock ticked down to our scheduled Main Event start time, the onlookers grew rather excited. We were impressed! Was poker really that big in Perth? Had their State of Origin victory really propelled the game to heights never before seen in this country? Had they all come to catch a glimpse of the physical specimen that is “Tony Unique”?

Not exactly.

The clock ticked past 7:00pm and the stage adjacent to the poker room lit up like Christmas as the MC’s welcomed the audience to “Live Like A King” – a promotion running in the Crown Perth Casino where local players have the chance to win $25,000. Wait, you mean these people aren’t here for the poker? Aiya!

A lady was drawn from the barrel and welcomed to the stage, but she didn’t even get as far as the opportunity to spin the “big wheel”. Unlucky madam, but still, $1,200 is not a bad reward for an exciting evening in the casino.

The prize was awarded and the casino patrons wandered off in different directions, into the forest of the casino floor to resume engagement with their preferred casino game of choice. Sadly for the majority of them, it wasn’t to be poker tonight.

However their departure opened space for our poker patrons to enter the fray of the Crown Perth Poker Room. A little later than expected, but they were just as eager to spin their own wheel of chance right here on the poker table. And they know that if they can spin right over the next few days then they’ll receive more than $25,000. They’ll get the opportunity at a likely record prize pool at the ANZPT in Perth, a probable six-figure return and the honour of forever being crowned a champion of this great game. That sounds like living like a King if you ask me.

Some of those taking their seats on Day 1A include Oliver Gill, Gary Benson, Daniel Levy, Ashley Warner, Dean Francis, Sal Fazzino, former ANZPT Perth runner up John Corr and Team PokerStars Pro Bryan Huang. Looking refreshed after enduring the flu at the recent Aussie Millions, Huang is a big supporter of this stop of the tour thanks to the close proximity to his home land of Singapore.

We’ll keep a close eye on Huang and the rest of our Day 1A field through six levels of play this evening. Stay tuned to the PokerStars Blog for stories both on and off the felt, while PokerNews’ Joshua Bell delivers the live updates in the section at the top of the page.
