It didn’t take long for us to lose our first player from today’s ANZPT Sydney final table. In fact, it would take just two hands to see Brent Taunton eliminated as the final table got off to a rocketing start.
Milan Gurung raised to 50,000 from under the gun with Taunton and Peco Stojanovski making the call to see a flop of 6♠Q♠10♦. That’s when things got a little crazy.
Action checked around the table to Stojanovski who bet 125,000. Gurung folded but Taunton check-raised to 400,000 which represented most of his stack. Stojanovski thought briefly before announcing all in and Taunton called off his last chips. It was Stojanovski’s Q♥10♠ top-two pair against the A♠9♠ flush draw of Taunton.
The turn and river bricked off to see Taunton to the cashier in ninth place for $17,400.
It would then take a little while for our next casualty, but approaching the end of Level 23, we lost both Milan Gurung and Nathan Sawyers in quick succession.
Gurung survived one all-in clash during the final table, but couldn’t make it two when his A♣10♠ fell to Josh Redhouse’s K♣Q♦. A king on the flop was enough to see Redhouse collect and end Gurung’s run in eighth place for $23,350.
He was soon followed by Nathan Sawyers.
Sawyers started the day as the second biggest stack, but not much went right for him on this final table. After sliding down to the short stack, Sawyers cold four-bet all in from the big blind with A♥J♣. Oliver Gill was the preflop raiser on the button and he got away from pocket eights, but Peco Stojanovski wasn’t going anywhere with his pocket queens.
The board ran out 4♦Q♠2♠K♦K♠ to improve Stojanovski to a full house to eliminate Sawyers in seventh place for a nice $29,750 score.
So that leaves us with just six players remaining in the hunt for the ANZPT Sydney crown. Oliver Gill landed a big double up to get himself back into contention, but the big mover today as been Peco Stojanovski. He’s up to 2.7 million in chips for a substantial chip lead, while Steven Zhou has slipped back onto the short stack with about 900,000.
