8.10pm: That’s all folks!

Day 1b of the PokerStars.net APPT Grand Final has been bagged, tagged and locked away in the vault. Aaron Tran may have been the first past the magical 100K mark today and bagged 147,200 in chips, but it was fellow Sydneysider Daniel Neilson who tops the counts with 164,100, barnstorming his way through the pack late in the day.

Daniel Neilson is definitely one to watch!

Neilson has been on an incredible run during the latter half of 2010, including victory in the Western Poker Classic at the Burswood Casino in Perth and also has the 2009 ANZPT Sydney High Rollers championship on his mantle. Given his form, there’s every chance he could add the APPT Grand Final trophy to his collection.

Two players who have already added said title (Grant Levy and Martin Rowe) also made it through to Day 2, as well as Team PokerStars Pro Daniel Negreanu, 2009 APPT Auckland champion Simon Watt and 2009 Aussie Millions champion Stewart Scott. We’ll have a full wrap for you shortly.

8pm: “Chopportunity” not so great for Scott

Tournament director Jason Wicks paused the tournament clock with almost seven minutes remaining and announced that only three more hands would be played on all tables before calling it a night, but in the last hand on table 25, Sean Dunwoodie moved all-in with A♠ Q♣ , but Stewart Scott woke up with A♥ A♦ and called call-in.

“Give me a king-jack flop,” Dunwoodie said to the dealer. BANG – down came the flop of 6♣ J♣ K♥ . SNAP – the 10â™  spiked on the turn. The rest of the table and the railbirds groaned as Scott began angrily packing his things before he headed to the door.

SNAP! “Come back,” the players shouted. “It’s a chop!” Indeed it was – the dealer had produced the Q♥ on the river and was already splitting up the pot. “Jeez, I’d have rather busted out,” said Scott as he looked down at his stack. The 2009 Aussie Millions Main Event champion finished the day with just over 18,000.

7:50pm: Sean’s sixth sense

Casey Kastle opened to 3,000 from the cutoff with Yibo Zhou making the call on the button before Sean Dunwoodie popped it to 13,000 in the small blind. The big blind and Kastle folded before Zhou moved all in for an additional 21,000. Dunwoodie thought briefly before making the call.

Dunwoodie sensed weakness as he called with A♣ 8♣ but Zhou had a real hand with his 10♣ 10â™  . But then again, maybe Dunwoodie sensed something else as the flop landed 8♥ 8♦ A♥ to the “ooohs” of the table as Dunwoodie flopped a full boat. The J♣ turn and 5â™  river left Zhou heading to the rail as Dunwoodie climbed to 87,000 in chips.

7:45pm: Kozlov KO’ed

2010 ANZPT Melbourne champion Martin Kozlov is the latest casualty from today’s field. Kozlov has a habit of working the short stack, and again he was short for long periods of the day, but he’s just lost the battle after running his pocket sixes into the pocket jacks of 2007 APPT Sydney champ Grant Levy.

The board ran out Q♦ A♣ 7♣ 9♣ J♥ to eliminate Kozlov and jump Levy up to a commanding 85,000 chips.

7:40pm: Rubie gets restless

Brendon Rubie has taken a hit to his stack after making a reluctant fold on the river. Rubie opened from the hijack to 2,000 before the button player raised to 6,500. Rubie called and the flop landed Q♣ K♣ 9♦ . Both players checked and the turn brought the 9♠ . Rubie led out for 7,000 and his opponent called as the 5♥ completed the board on the river.

Rubie checked and was then faced with a bet of 11,550. Rubie deliberated for some time but let it go to slip to just 22,000.

7.35pm: Celina Lin eliminated

When Celina Lin played in an EPT event earlier this year, she was eliminated at the hands of fellow Team PokerStars Pro Vicky Cohen when she moved all-in with pocket queens in the last level of the day, only to lose the flip against Cohen’s A-K.

Team PokerStars Pro Celina Lin has been sent to the rail

It was almost a case of deja vu against Dutch PokerStars Qualifier Roel Pijpers – during this final level, she moved all-in with A-K but couldn’t hit against Pijpers’ pocket queens! Lin was disappointed, but Lin and Pijpers have become great friends over the years playing together in the APPT.

Meanwhile, Canadaian Team PokerStars Pro Daniel Negreanu has managed to recover from his earlier hit against Andrew Hinrichsen to get his stack back up to around 55,000.

7.30pm: The secret to success?

There’s plenty of past champions in today’s field, so PokerStars.tv caught up with a few to find out what just what it takes to win a major poker event (apart from charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent)? Find out by watching the video below!

7:15pm: Sabat sets one up

American Eddy Sabat is now amongst the chip leaders after raking in a huge pot when his river bet was paid off. There was over 30,000 in the middle when we arrived at the table to see Sabat fire 22,075 into the middle on a board of 7♥ 3♠ 7♦ 8♦ 5♦ .

His opponent went deep into the tank for a good five minutes before the TD called the clock and gave the player 90 seconds to act. Before timing out, the player made the call but cringed as Sabat opened 8♥ 8♠ for full house. Sabat is now up to 90,000.

7pm: Play resumes – blinds 400-800 (ante 75)
