APPT Sydney Day 1b: Taking poker to the people

December 07, 2010

One of the great things about the universal game of poker is that literally anyone can play. On any given day, if the cards, and luck, go the right way, it’s possible for the world’s worst player to compete with, and even beat the world’s best player. That’s why we love nothing more than to see poker reaching out into the general public as new players are brought into the great game that we love.

Daniel Negreanu is known for many great poker accomplishments. He’s a four-time WSOP bracelet winner, a WPT Player of the Year and one of the leading tournament earners of all time. But perhaps his greatest legacy will be his contributions to extend the game of poker out into the public eye to attract new fans and bring new players to the game.

This morning we woke up bleary-eyed at the ungodly hour of 8:15am to catch Negreanu on the local television show Sunrise, hosted by the giggling duo of Mel and Koshy. Negreanu was all class as he bounced back responses about how he got started in poker, going broke and then making it big in Vegas, and how to work on your poker face. Love him or hate him, Negreanu’s personality is infectious and his appearance on national TV can only ever be a positive for poker.

Ever the promoter, Daniel Negreanu will be the feature act of the APPT Sydney field

Negreanu also gave a plug for the APPT Grand Final which is underway here at Star City Casino and we expect to see him highlight today’s day 1b field. Yesterday the field of 75 was reduced to just 41 by the day’s end, but we should see a larger turnout for today’s flight as some of the big names roll into town.

All of the action kicks off at 12:30pm (GMT+11) and the PokerStars Live Blogging team featuring yours truly and my spritely sidekick Landon Blackhall will be here to bring you all of the live updates from the first shuffle to the final bust out. We look forward to your company throughout the day.
