It was always going to be a tough ask for Jazz Mathers at this final table. Starting the day as the short stack with 146,000 in chips, equating to just over six big blinds, it was a treacherous position to be in and one that would require some luck to get back into contention.

However on one of the first hands of the day, Mathers tried for that double up. His chips went into the middle and never returned.

Ravi Maravar opened with a raise and Mathers moved all in holding 9♣ 9â™  . Maravar made the call with A♣ 10♣ and the race was on. The flop landed 8♥ J♦ 7♣ which meant the players switched outs – a ten would no longer be good for Maravar as it would give Mathers the straight, and vice versa. That became relevant when the A♦ appeared on the turn to put Maravar into the lead and leaving Mathers with just three tens in the deck to stay alive. It wasn’t to be as the J♣ completed the board.

Mathers takes home $16,650 for his 9th place finish which is the best result of his poker career.

Those chips didn’t end up helping Ravi Maravar too much as he was involved in a bit of a cooler just a few minutes later. A preflop raising was unfolded with Maravar committing with Q♦ Q♥ , only to run into the K♣ K♦ of David Yan. The board ran out 2♣ 10♦ 5♣ 9♥ 7♣ and after a countdown of chips, Maravar’s stack was decimated.

His last few chips went in next hand with K♥ 9♦ with Ashley Mason making the call holding A♣ Q♠ . The board ran out J♠ 7♠ Q♦ J♦ 6♠ to leave Maravar to depart in 8th place for a $22,920 score.

Just like that, we’re down to seven. They’ve locked up a $29,200 pay day with David Yan now out in front with over 2.6 million chips.
