Welcome to Super Bowl Monday in Australia! It’s not the traditional Super Bowl party that you might expect if you’re following this from the USA. There are no BBQs, no beer, no parties. It’s a little tricky when things kick off at 9:30am on a Monday morning. Yep, we live in the future in Australia. I won’t spoil who won.

Plenty of Australians are fans of American football. Passionate even. But they are certainly in the minority. The fact that Australian Rules football hero Luke Hodge gave the shuffle up and deal instructions at the Aussie Millions yesterday gives an indication of where our true passions lay.

American football is a game of tactics and in-depth strategy which makes it hard to follow as a casual fan in Australia. I heard that the first score was from a safety today. I have no idea what that means, but I was pleased that everyone was being careful.

Despite my ignorance, even a casual Australian fan of American Football like me will still have a passing interest in the Super Bowl. After all, it’s more than just a game. It’s a true spectacle. Pure entertainment. Even the ads are interesting.

It’s the pinnacle of their sport and that resonates with those taking their seats in today’s Aussie Millions Main Event. The comparison is simple – this event is the Super Bowl of poker in Australia.

Perhaps that puts into perspective the prestige behind this poker championship. Many of the locals in the Crown Poker live and breathe poker 24/7/365. They battle all year, working their way through the phase satellites in the hope of one day taking their seats on this very stage for a shot at poker immortality and that elusive Championship ring.

Yesterday we saw 176 players come together for the opening flight of the Aussie Millions Main Event, and today we’re looking to more than match that number, before a massive field tomorrow will likely push the total number of entrants to in excess of 700.
