Hundreds of thousands of players descended on the Blowout Series for a New Year’s Day like no other. Here’s what happened at the PokerStars tables on this hectic day…

BLOWOUT BULLETIN

Rui “RuiNF” Ferreira: A Blowout Series debut win

A seat for the SCOOP POY: There was a moment on Lex Veldhuis’s stream last night when a new player came to the table and Veldhuis said something like: “RuiNF? I’m not scared.” It indicated just how scared he probably was. With good reason. By the end of the night, RuiNF, also known as Rui Ferreira, had bagged his first Blowout Series title, winning the $2,100 buy-in 6-Max PKO (Event #18-H), and starting 2021 as he surely intends to go on. Ferreira has won five SCOOP titles, as well as Player of the Year accolades in 2020, and is formidable in the major series. The Portuguese player, now based in Brazil, won $67,856 for the victory, including a staggering $41,313 in bounties. No one else in the field got to $10K in bounty payments, which shows just how fearsome Ferreira really is.

No sub for $ubuta1: We don’t write about poker players from Mongolia very often, but when we do it tends to be about “$ubuta1“. This player is single-handedly putting Mongolia on the poker map these days, and last night won the first Blowout Series title for the country, about eight months since claiming its first SCOOP victory. Back in May, $ubuta1 won a $530 buy-in Afternoon Deep Stack, for $62,273, and this time he or she saw in the New Year with success in a $215 buy-in 6-Max PKO tournament (Event #18-M). It meant beating a field of 2,679 entries and earned another $58,465, including bounties. There were 11 players from Mongolia in the field, four of whom made the money. So maybe there’s a growing interest in the game over there and we look forward to seeing it build.

Fast and cool in the Super Sonic: New Year’s Day wrapped up with a hyper-turbo, including the $530 buy-in Daily Supersonic. That event attracted the usual gallery of stars, but it was the lesser known “acoolplayer” from the UK who took it down, banking $25,277 and leaving players like Ole “wizowizo” Schemion, Dante “dantegoyaF” Goya and Christian “WATnlos” Rudolph to lick their wounds in third, fourth and fifth, respectively. Meanwhile, the low buy-in event went to Brazil’s Samuel “samuelwallac” Wallace, who picked up $10,961, which is the biggest score of his career. Wallace opened a Pocket Fives account in 2015 and has been grinding the small stakes ever since. He won a Bounty Builder title in 2018, earning him $5,368, but has now doubled that after beating a field of 20,985 to the Blowout Series title. It’s always gratifying to see players sticking it out and finally getting the reward.

Barely any room at the inn: It was an exceptionally busy night on PokerStars last night, especially at the New Year’s Bash. This tournament had a guarantee of $2 million and only a buy-in of $11, but the guarantee ended up being comfortably beaten. By the time late registration ended, there were 219,967 entries registered (inc. 35,240 re-entries), and the prize pool sat at $2,155,676. The remaining 544 players will come back to day and play to a champion, who is slated to win $135,702. At the same time last night, the $22 6-Max PKO (Event #18-L) maxed out its number of entries, with 25,000 sitting down to play. Brazil’s “JOTTAPAM” won the event, nearly 12 hours later. That victory was worth $31,570, including bounties.

TWITCH WATCH

It was a rough night for Lex Veldhuis, who was playing about nine tables a lot of the time and coming up against some super tough players. But he was very chuffed with one particular call here:

COUNTRIES LEADER BOARD

Brazil almost always win these country leader boards anyway, and now they also have Rui “RuiNF” Ferreira playing for them after the Portuguese player moved from the Netherlands, where he has been based for the past few years. Ferreira’s victory on Friday night was one of three Brazilian successes, and it’s decisive in putting his new adopted country ahead of his old one.

8 titles – Brazil
7 – Netherlands
5 – Canada, UK
4 – Sweden
3 – Estonia, Mexico, Romania, Russia
2 – Germany, Ireland
1 – Argentina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Finland, Greece, Latvia, Mongolia, Panama, Ukraine.
