EPT €25K High Roller: Daniel Alaei leads Langmann

May 01, 2009

EPTThere’s always something special about a High Roller event. It’s not just the inflated buy-in – €25,000 in this case – it’s the banter and ribbing that goes with it.

When huge fields converge for the main events, tables are packed with players who know nothing about each other. But when the deep wallets get an airing for the exclusive side events, the fields are smaller and more familiar. Big names, big bankrolls and big egos all add up to, well, a big thing.

Despite the main EPT event still being in full swing, 79 pitched up to hand over their €25,000, generating a tasty prize pool of €1,975,000. The winner will get his hands on €720,000 of that, ensuring the sort of cashflow to fund many more high-rolling hijinks.

Florian Langmann

Team PokerStars Pro turned out in force: ElkY, Barry Greenstein, Daniel Negreanu, Peter Eastgate, Vanessa Rousso, Ivan Demidov and Alexandre Gomes among them. They met with some of the most feared names in the game in Gus Hansen, Phil Ivey, Tony G and Chris Ferguson. The list was plentiful, but at the end of eight levels, only 37 of those who sat down with 50,000 chips for this three-day spectacular had survived.

They’ve bagged and tagged, and will now be watered and fed. Resting most will be Daniel Alaei, from the USA, who tops the pile with 302,100 after a late bonus of knocking out two players in one hand with J-J v A-K and A-Q. A nice way to wrap up the night. In second, with, 230,800 is the PokerStars ShootingStar Florian Langmann, the first player to get all his chips in the middle earlier today for a big pot that carried him through the next eight levels.

We’ll be back tomorrow for more of the same.
