Home / Uncategorized / EPT Copenhagen: Chips and beer

Four months ago Michael Aston was working a regular job in a cafe back home in Malvern, England. But in his spare time Aston was making money playing poker online, making more money there than serving tea and cake could ever pay. So he ditched the job and swapped it all for the long days, late nights and potentially glorious rewards of the poker world and so far it’s proven to be a pretty good decision. The modest, mild-mannered 22 year old is now headed for the biggest cash of his poker life, and he looks like he’s enjoying it.

“This is by far the biggest game I’ve played” said Aston, clutching the chip counts list in one hand (showing him in seventh place overall) and a beer in the other. His usual haunts are the turbo tournaments on PokerStars “anything with more than 500 players and that’s fast”, but now has his sights on making the final table home.

“I looked at the list and I’m seventh. And I spent most of yesterday folding!

“This is just surreal” he said, pointing to the TV set and the top line players milling around. “I played against a Norwegian guy yesterday who I was watching on TV just a few days ago!”

Despite the lights, the prize money and the notable company, Aston’s feet are still firmly on the ground. Having made the money late yesterday Aston sought out Peter Eastgate, not just for a chat with the world champion, but to pledge 5% of his tournament winnings to “Friends of Eastgate”, his newly created charity aimed at helping kids in the third world.

Aston starts with 155,200 today. He could be handing over a big chunk of money when his work here is finished.
