Piceci is an Italian living in Siebnen, Switzerland. He works in insurance and mainly plays poker with friends in the Swiss Poker Casino. His best live tournament result before making the final of EPT San Remo was 16th place in the €1,000 CAPT Bregenz Open in Austria in February 2010 for €1,645. This is his second EPT – he also competed at EPT Snowfest but didn’t cash.

2: Alexey Rybin, 29, Moscow, Russia – 1,890,000

Rybin has prospered with gaming businesses back home in Moscow – so much so that when one of his opponents here in San Remo offered to pay euros to see Rybin’s second card, he refused saying: “I don’t need money, I only need chips.” Later he told another player considering a call on the river: “One for free, two for chips.” This is Rybin’s second EPT; he does not consider himself a tournament player, specialising mainly in very high stakes live cash games in Moscow. He is already a VIP member of Casino San Remo after considerable success at the roulette tables.

3: Atanas Gueorguiev, 39, Sofia, Bulgaria – 2,520,000

He also won a WPT side event in Barcelona last June for €52,300 and cashed in the €1,000 EPT Barcelona side event in September. A former backgammon player, Gueorguiev now plays poker full time and has lifetime tournament winnings of more than $570,000.

Boeree is a professional poker player and won the European Ladies Championships in 2008. She studied astrophysics in Manchester – alongside her final table opponent Michael Piper – and was introduced to poker when she became one of five contestants in a reality TV show. Following that experience, she studied studying poker intensely and has since notched up several tournament wins and final tables around the world. As of January 2010 she had live tournament cashes exceeding $230,000. In her spare time, Liv is a heavy metal fan and an accomplished rock guitarist.

Pettersson has just finished school and is currently playing poker full-time. This is his first ever live event which he is attending with his father. The pair are planning to buy a car here in Italy to ensure they can get home. Toni is also considering playing next week’s EPT Grand Final in Monte Carlo as well. His favourite game is pot limit Omaha.

8: Michael Piper, 25, London, UK – PokerStars qualifier – 4,600,000

Piper is a poker professional from London. This is his first EPT but not his first big tournament – he competed in several WSOP side events last summer as well as WSOP-E side events in London last year. He failed to cash in those events but won £15,000 in a recent tournament at the International Club in London. He said: “Whatever happens at San Remo from now on, I’ll be delighted. I haven’t had a single bad beat, all my hands have held up and I’ve had action on most of them.”
