Poker can be a cruel game. Just ask the player with “Here to win” written across the back of his shirt. He’s out. His ace-king battered by king-queen on a cruel board.

Elsewhere Francesco Ciriani just lost what could be a critical pot for him. With an ace on the board and one in his opponents hand by the river, Ciriani winced, oooh’d and held onto his cards just long enough to suggest he wanted to play the hand again. No. Hand them over sunshine.

On the next hand Ciriani tried a trick that’s often proved successful as a way of adding at least the blinds to your stack. Moving all-in for around 6,000 he immediately stood up, gathered his possessions, slung a bag around his shoulder and prepared to leave. It worked. No takers this time and some vital reinforcements. But it may only be a matter of time for the big Italian.
