The €10,000 High Roller event at EPT Deauville is now officially the biggest of that kind there has ever been on this stop. It’s not bad given earlier fears that everyone had given it a miss.

By the time they all went to dinner tonight, the tournament board showed that there had been 93 unique entries and six re-buys. Vojtech Ruzicka beat a field of 85 last year, so that is already comfortably surpassed–and registration is open until the start of Day 2 tomorrow.

Ruzicka is back to defend his crown, but is facing a predictably tough task. The field is stacked with former champions, award winners and hyper-aggressive Italians. And it’s the latter of those, Dario Sammartino to be precise, who raced into an early lead.

Dario Sammartino: Early leader

Sammartino, who cashed in the Main Event and picked up the GPI Italian Player of the Year award last night, had tripled his stack before dinner. In perhaps the most notable pot he played, he flopped a set of tens and felted Ludovic Lacay. France wept as Italy rejoiced.

ElkY, Remi Castaignon and Roger Hairabedian, among others, now hold the hopes of the home nation. Meanwhile, the fearsome Nordics are also out in force, with Michael Tureniec, Joni Jouhkimainen, Kent Lundmark et al blazing away.

They will play another four more levels, through to around about midnight, and you will find updates and chip counts on the High Roller page. With starting stacks of 50,000 and an agreeably slow structure, there is plenty of play left to savour. Stay tuned. Artem insists.
