Home / Uncategorized / EPT10 Grand Final: Can anyone stop Ole Schemion?

There is always a player or two that seem unstoppable in the poker world. They emerge from the ranks of the merely world class to a whole new level, shining that little bit brighter than the other stars. It’s a heady combination of consistently incredible play mixed with good old fashioned run good that seems to make them bulletproof.

Players including Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier, Jason Mercier, Vanessa Selbst and Dan Smith have all been in that group in the past. Don’t get me wrong, all four of those continue to be amazing players, but the cloak of invincibility has been well and truly swiped by a young German called Ole Schemion. If you follow the EPT at all then Schemion’s name will not be new to you.

As if to prove the point, Schemion earlier found aces in the small blind and limped into Jason Mercier’s big blind. The American Team PokerStars Pro raised the 8,000 limp to 26,000 with ace-king and Schemion came back over the top for 78,000. Mercier fought back with a re-raise to 168,000 and then called the all-in for all his 561,000 stack. It’s a cooler, for sure, but it’s the kind of cooler that Mercier always seemed to put on other players.

Schemion giving it a bit of the wizowizo

Schemion, who plays under the name “wizowizo” online at PokerStars, has racked up $4,706,151 in live tournament winnings in just three years. He’s won seven EPT tournaments outright, including the €10,300 High Roller in Sanremo last week. That tournament title alone netted him €265,000 and all but sealed his position at the top of the EPT Season 10 Player of the Year leader board. Given that Schemion is currently among the chip leaders, ahead of fellow German high roller Philipp Gruissem but behind Ping San Chan and Daniel Negreanu, it seems almost inconceivable that anyone will be able to snatch the EPT10 crown away from him. The €50,000 EPT passport will very welcome, no doubt, but to most independent observers it’s an incredible feat to match to his GPI Player of the Year title.

Schemion has made the EPT his own this season

Schemion’s made eight final tables this season and the EPT Grand Final was very kind to him last year. He won three events here, including the €10,300 six-max turbo for €101,500.
