Home / Uncategorized / EPT11 Barcelona: Super High Roller midday update

The €50,000 Super High Roller event is through its first four levels, but it’s the nature of these things that not only has nobody done enough to guarantee a shot at winning the thing, but also nobody is out of contention either. This tournament allows for multiple reentries and registration is open until the start of Day 2.

You can get yourself knocked out time and again today and it’s not all doom and gloom. So long as you’ve got another €50,000 knocking around every time it all goes wrong, you’re going to make Day 2 regardless.

Daniel Negreanu has already found himself dipping into both of his pockets. He was a late arrival, but soon found jacks against Jean-Noel Thorel‘s kings and couldn’t get the French player to put them down, even after a check shove on the turn. Negreanu followed Govert Metaal and Talal Shakerchi in dusting off a 250,000 stack within the space a three levels. It meant that the number of entries had ticked past 51, last year’s total, with many hours of registration still left. (Latest count: 55.)

Thorel was thus catapulted to the top of the early chip counts, where he found himself rubbing shoulders with Jorryt van Hoof. Van Hoof has grown accustomed to life at the top of poker tournament leader boards: he took over the lead of the World Series Main Event on the final day of the summer phase of the WSOP.

Jorryt van Hoof: Accustomed to life at the top

He’ll be reunited with that stack in early November, when they play out the final table at the WSOP, but he is enjoying the hiatus by playing in his first EPT Super High Roller and doing what he’s done a lot of this year: accumulating chips.

Speaking of chip accumulation, Vanessa Selbst is also among the leaders at this early stage. Selbst doubled up within the first couple of hours, flopping two pair with 45 and getting Fedor Holz to pay her off with his top pair of kings. This is the first time Holz has appeared in a Super High Roller too, and he appears to be on a pretty big spin up having won a €2,000 Estrellas side event here this week already, banking €43,750.

Vanessa Selbst: Early double

It is, of course, early days and there are some fine players involved in this one. You can follow all the hand-by-hand action on the main Super High Roller page and check out latest chip-counts there too.
