Martins Adeniya ran into his countryman Toby Lewis on the stairs on the way into the Salle des Etoiles. “Did you see the fight?” Adeniya asked, referring of course to the Floyd Mayweather v Manny Pacquiao bout last night/this morning in Las Vegas. Lewis said that he hadn’t. “Nor me,” Adeniya said. “I had to sleep.”
While the fight of the century perhaps didn’t quite live up to billing — sleep was more valuable — Adeniya and Lewis maybe didn’t know yet that their choice of conversation topic would have resonance over here in Monaco.
When the two of them made their way into the tournament room of the PokerStars and Monte-Carlo®Casino EPT Grand Final, they would need to don their own gloves and throw in the towel on their own friendship. Adeniya and Lewis were table-mates, both aiming to go eight rounds of their own in this €10,000 Main Event. Both would be hoping to avoid a knock-out; if only points decided them at the close of play they will both have done well.
All of which brings us to Day 1B of this grandest of grand finales. Although registration is open until the start of play tomorrow, and there’s a €50,000 Super High Roller event taking place in the Americas Room — the “One Day 50K”, as we’re hoping people will start calling it — throngs of superstars are still expected for the second flight of the Main Event.
Lewis and Adeniya also found Mohsin Charania among the early arrivals on their table, the 2012 champion returning to the scene of his greatest triumph. Their table was the first to be found inside the tournament room, and another one to relish was being filled in the diametric opposite corner. Up on the mezzanine, and as far away from the door as possible, Fatima Moreira de Melo was settling into her seat beside Yannick Wrang and Nick Petrangelo.
Artem Litvinov was close to the midpoint of the hypothetical line that joined them. The garrulous Russian played in the Shark Cage yesterday but was today more reminiscent of a dragon. He is dressed head to toe in orangey-red and is accessorised by an e-cigarette; he vaped steam through his nostrils as the welcome video played on the big screen.
We will have all the action from three tournaments today. The €10,000 Main Event is on the Main Event page. The One-Day €50K is on the One-Day €50K page. And the France Poker Series plays to its champion on both the FPS page and EPT Live.
