Redemption is available for any of the Super High Rollers

What if, when you’re mid-way through a poker tournament, you decide you don’t really fancy it anymore? Wouldn’t it be nice to just be able to pick up your chips, stroll back to the cash desk and get your money back.

I think we all know by now that that’s not actually an option. Despite what that fella at your home game tells you (you know the one), there are no refunds for a freezeout. Once you’re in, you’re in. Until you’re out.

The tournament organisers at the European Poker Tour, however, at least like to offer everybody the chance to get close to their ideal scenario. That is why the EPT Barcelona tournament schedule includes another €5,000 super satellite to the €50,000 Super High Roller. And why it will take place after play wraps up tonight.

This super satellite, which will play to a hyper turbo structure, is open to all players, regardless of whether they have already played on Day 1 of the tournament, and regardless of whether they still have chips.

Garry Gates, the PokerStars’ VIP host, referred to it as a “reverse freeroll”, ie, a tournament that offers players the chance to recoup their entry fee even after they have already joined the action. He might also have used “retrospective” or even “redemption”. This is a chance for anyone to get out of a hole and pretend it never happened.

Of course, this is not the only reason you might want to play this tournament. The €50,000 Super High Roller event offers unlimited re-entries all the way to the beginning of Day 2. Players busting at any time on Day 1 can therefore play this satellite to earn themselves another bullet, or anybody arriving late to Barcelona can still get in on the cheap. It’s a “must-play” satellite if you haven’t bagged chips in the €50,000 event — ie, if you win this, you’re going to be sitting down on Day 2 one way or another.

It’s kind of funny, but the following scenario is also possible: a player could have entered the €5,000 super satellite last night and won a €50,000 buy-in. He or she* could have then played the tournament today and bagged chips, then play another super satellite and pick up another €50,000. He could then go on and win the event (likely to pay close to €1 million) and it will feel like he never entered it at all.

This is the second time the EPT has hosted a redemption event and it was, as you would expect, popular last time. It starts at 10pm. Let’s see how many want that second life.

*Regrettably, it’s only actually “he”. There are no women in this event this time.
