Before the PokerStars and Monte-Carlo® Casino EPT Grand Final got under way the Super High Roller piqued the interest of high rollers everywhere. Starting on Monday 38 players (seven of whom re-bought after swift elimination), contested the biggest event on the Season 8 calendar (thanks to an exchange rate favouring the Euro).

Earlier today the final eight returned to play the final table, six of whom were paid. The biggest share went to eventual winner Justin Bonomo, who defeated Tobias Reinkemeier to take the title and a first prize of €1,640,000. As runner up Reinkemeier collected €1,064,000.

Super High Roller champion Justin Bonomo

“It’s so much more money than I’ve ever won ina poker tournament before,” said Bonomo, talking to Laura Cornelius, picking our Reinkemeier, a former EPT High Roller winner here on Monaco as his toughest opponent at the final.

“The final table in terms of skill; Tobias was my best opponent. He’s a very good player.”

The final itself had been the who’s who of poker you would expect from a tournament of such high standards. Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier finished in third place (€621,000) ahead of Patrik Antonius in fourth (€443,000), Masa Kagawa in fifth (€354,000) and Daniel Negreanu in sixth (€310,000). Former world champion Jonathan Duhamel was the bubble boy in seventh.

Lest you think that the Super High Roller winner would think of ways to store €1.6 million – in the trunk of an Aston Martin perhaps, or in the spare bedroom of a yacht. Not Bonomo.

“To be honest what’s on my mind right now is the main event,” he said, an event he sits down to play tomorrow.

Bonomo is hitting top form at the perfect moment. Good for an astonishing back to back win? We’ll find out soon enough.
