EPT9 Barcelona: Not as Super, but the High Rollers are back

August 23, 2012

The travelling poker community is pretty small, and players tend to see the same faces across the table time and time again. It only gets smaller when the buy-in goes up, and some of the highest high rollers must be sick of the sight of one another. “Ah, you again.”

The latest High Roller tournament has kicked off in Barcelona this afternoon – a €10,000 incarnation, with one reload. Pretty much all the familiar faces are out there: Philipp Gruissem, Justin Bonomo, Mike Watson, ElkY, Juha Helppi, Masa Kagawa, etc., etc.

Many of them haven’t even had to wait a week to get reacquainted having crossed swords in the Super High Roller event, which wrapped on Sunday. Angel Guillen, Artem Litvinov, Steve O’Dwyer, Andrew Lichtenberger all played that one and are back today.

Additionally, the final table players Jim McCrink, Mike McDonald and JC Alvarado are re-investing.

The champion Dan Smith is also almost certain to come and play, even though he is also in the final five in the €10,000 Heads Up tournament. Bonomo, Terje Augdal, Marc-Andre Ladouceur and Steven Silverman are the other players still in that event, and they have all agreed to pause in hostilities there so that they can get chummy in this event.

Players can take their €10,000 reload any time up to the beginning of level four, but it is not a top-up: they must have busted to replenish their stack. The tournament will play seven, one-hour levels, with no dinner break, and then many of the new friends/enemies are off to Camp Nou to watch Barcelona v Real Madrid.

That’s how they roll.
