EPT9 Barcelona: Ilari ‘Ziigmund’ Sahamies spends €2,000 on a massage

August 24, 2012

The world of the high stakes poker player can seem entirely alien to the outside observer. There are €10,000, €50,000 and €100,000 buy-ins, wallet-busting bottle service and watches that cost an average annual salary. Things that you and I would balk at are considered normal and often not considered at all. Yesterday Ilari ‘Ziigmund’ Sahamies, who largely sports a look of terrifying ambivalence at the poker table, if that’s even possible (it is, he does), had a massage that lasted most of the day, around six hours if anecdotal evidence is to be believed. If you hadn’t previously known of the eccentric Finn’s online high stakes antics, who plays under the name ‘Ilari FIN’ at PokerStars, the massage alone would be the give away.

You should be able to guess how much this massage cost if you read the title to this post. It cost €2,000 with the tip. Sahamies may argue that it’s money well spent, that it helped to steer him through to today where he sits on 2,300,000, above the 1,800,000 average chip count, with just 18 players left. The high stakes Finn has €29,400 locked up with a solid shot at the €1,007,550 title. Ultimately, it’s just ten big blinds in one of his $100-$200 PLO games. It’s a different world.

Lynn Gilmartin caught up with the Finn during the break on behalf of the PokerStars Blog. You can follow the live coverage and find other great articles by clicking here. Two tables remain.
