Let’s start Saturday off with a riddle.
What do you get when you put together a famous actor, a baseball legend, a stock car driver, a legendary author, and a few top poker players?
Answer #1: One very entertaining cocktail party.
Answer #2: The Friends of PokerStars
PokerStars just announced it has formed a brand new team of players for its roster. This group of poker enthusiasts, the Friends of PokerStars, has chosen to fly the PokerStars flag at live events all over the world.
Chances are, you know the names and faces. Just in case you have spent a little time under a rock in the last 20 or 30 years, here’s a quick look at PokerStars’ newest buddies.
Okay. Admit it. You know him as George. Everybody does. The beauty of Jason alexander is his ability to transcend the George character and take on just about any kind of role–including poker player. Alexander has a Tony award for his work on Broadway and has filled countless roles on the big and small screens. He’s also played at the World Series of Poker Main Event several times, and finished in 10th place at the Ante Up for Africa charity tournament in 2007. Alexander plays online at PokerStars using the screen name ‘J. Alexander’.
With a baseball career dating back a quarter century, Orel Hershiser is probably best known as the slinger for the late 80s L.A. Dodgers. He was there to help the team win the World Series in 1988. Since then, Hershiser has played for the Indians, Giants and Mets, before retiring from the game in 2000. Hershiser now spends a lot more of his time in the broadcast booth. He has increasingly been spending more time at the poker table, as well. He reached the quarter finals of the 2008 National Heads-Up Championships and won $75,000. Hershiser now plays online at PokerStars under the screen name ‘O. Hershiser’.
If this guy needs an introduction, you need to go back and read a little more about poker. We suggest you start with any one of Tom McEvoy’s countless books. After that, read some poker history and discover McEvoy is the 1983 World Series of Poker champion.
Once you read that, you will know McEvoy was the first World Series champ to get into the Main Event via satellite. McEvoy has spent the last quarter century as a pro poker player and author. He now plays online using the screen name ‘Tom McEvoy’.
Two WSOP bracelets in one year. Chew on that. Most people go their entire lives without winning one bracelet and Bill Chen won two in the same World Series. In 2006, he made it to three final tables and took the win at two of them. His take-away for that World Series alone was $800,000.
Since then, Chen co-authored the book ‘The Mathematics of Poker’ and spent his time in the world of high finance and confusing math. Chen plays at PokerStars with the fairly obvious name ‘Bill Chen’.
It was a long and winding road for Darus Suharto to the 2008 World Series of Poker final table. It stretches from Indonesia to Canada to Las Vegas. That road led Suharto from humble amateur poker player and accountant to millionaire.
Suharto won his seat to the 2008 World Series on PokerStars and made it all the way to the final table. He placed sixth and won $2,418,562.
He plays online at PokerStars using the screen name ‘DarusSuharto’.
We like all of the Friends of PokerStars, but when it comes to Anthony Holden, we simply bow in reverence. Holden is author of the ‘Big Deal,’ a book that changed the lives of more than a few future poker players.
Holden’s poker works are just a few of his more than 30 books on subjects ranging from music, to Shakespeare, to the British royal family.
You will find Holden playing online at PokerStars using the screen name ‘TonyHolden’.
Gualter Salles holds our spot at the top of the list of poker players who have nearly died in a high speed crash. Salles is a famous Brazilian race car driver with a career dating back many years. Seriously, if you have the chance, check out the You Tube videos of Salles’ car evaporating in a pretty spectacular crash.
Now, he’s on to less dangerous pursuits. He owns a racing team and is playing poker. He’s already posted some big poker wins and is now an official Friend of PokerStars. He plays online as ‘stockcar99’.
